On 03 September, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun spoke at the UNICEF Executive Board in New York. He described the violence against children in Myanmar by the military junta, including killings, torture, detention, landmine injuries, and lack of healthcare and education.
The text of the Ambassador’s statement is as follows.
Myanmar continues to pay tribute to the work of the UNICEF for its persistent effort in ensuring the well-being of children all over the world, particularly those in the most vulnerable settings, including the children in my country.
The crisis in Myanmar has entered into 5 years, and the state of affairs is heartbreaking. The military junta’s campaign of terror against the people of Myanmar including children is unabated and continues persistently.
Children bear the brunt of the crisis, and their situation is dire. The UN OHCHR has reported that in 2024 alone, at least 248 children were killed by the military, part of an unprecedented civilian death toll.
The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) has documented that children as young as two years old are being targeted, tortured, and arbitrarily detained.
