Nearly 150 political prisoners freed in Tanintharyi Region

Nearly 150 political prisoners were released from three prisons in Tanintharyi Region under a junta amnesty, according to the Political Prisoners Network–Myanmar (PPNM).
The junta said it granted amnesty to more than 10,000 prisoners held in prisons and detention facilities nationwide to mark Peasants’ Day on March 2.
In Tanintharyi Region, 6 political prisoners were released from Tanintharyi Prison, 35 from Myeik Prison, and 108 from Dawei Prison, bringing the total to 149, the PPNM said.
As of 1:00 p.m. on March 3, only 3,613 political prisoners were actually among those released from prisons across the country, the PPNM said.
On March 2, the junta announced an amnesty for 7,337 male and female inmates serving sentences under Sections 50(j) and 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.
The junta also said it dropped 9,532 cases involving 12,487 people charged under the same sections who had not yet been sentenced, and released the accused.
