“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is an old friend of China”

Beijing publicly described Myanmar’s detained democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as an “old friend” at a press briefing Thursday amid mounting calls for proof that the 80-year old is alive and in good health.

Responding to a question whether Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s situation had been raised during Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent meeting with regime leader Min Aung Hlaing last week, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said, “Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is an old friend of China. Her circumstance has always been on our minds.”
