Regime staff told DVB that they were ordered by the General Administration Department, which is under the Ministry of Home Affairs, to burn documents from the 2020 elections, and election-related data, in Yangon’s Dagon Seikkan Township on Wednesday.
One staff member told DVB on the condition of anonymity that Dagon Seikkan Township administrators and members of the regime’s Union Election Commission (UEC) burnt paper documents containing 2020 election data on Feb. 4. He said that this was also done in Yangon’s East, South, and North Dagon townships on the same day.
A source inside the Insein District administration in Yangon Region told DVB on the condition of anonymity that Naypyidaw established a 14-member committee tasked with “erasing 2020 election results and records, and performances of the National League for Democracy (NLD) government,” following the conclusion of the regime’s 2025-26 elections on Jan. 25.
This new committee oversees the destruction of these materials and reports to the regime’s Home Affairs Ministry and Defence Ministry, the source told DVB. He added that his office has handled the burning of 2020 election-related documents and data in Yangon’s Insein and East and West Hlaingthaya townships.
Sources close to Naypyidaw told DVB on the condition of anonymity that regime administration offices in 45 Yangon townships and 20 towns in other states and regions received the same order.
The NLD party repeated a landslide victory in the 2020 elections after doing the same in 2015. Regime leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, however, dismissed the election results and accused the NLD of voter fraud without providing any evidence to date.
Min Aung Hlaing led the military coup on Feb. 1, 2021, and detained State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint, who have been held by his regime in prison ever since unable to communicate with the outside world.
