Myanmar’s post‑coup turmoil has pushed university student migration to Thailand to a level six times higher than before 2021, according to a new report.
The study found that annual enrolments by Myanmar students on Thai degree programs surged from 2,500-2,800 before the coup to over 17,000 in 2025.
Co-authored by Dr. Nyi Nyi Kyaw, a research fellow at the University of Bristol, and Dr. Sirada Khemanitthathai, a lecturer at Chiang Mai University, the study was published by Hanns‑Seidel‑Stiftung and the Nelson Mandela Centre at Chulalongkorn University.
