Myanmar junta leader confirms no change in election schedule despite earthquake

Despite a severe earthquake last week, Myanmar junta chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing confirmed on Thursday that the military regime will not postpone the elections it plans to hold in December 2025.

The military leader, who is currently in Bangkok for the 6th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit, made the remarks during a private meeting with the Nepalese prime minister on Thursday afternoon.

The statement was later broadcast on regime-controlled media in Myanmar at 8pm that evening.
