As the conflict persists, military junta-run newspapers reported on December 6 that 71 wards and village tracts in Sittwe and Kyaukphyu, remaining under military control, will not conduct elections.
U Than Soe, the chairman of the Union Election Commission (UEC) of the junta, issued a statement declaring that the circumstances do not permit the conduct of elections. He specified that no elections will take place in 53 village tracts, including the Sanai Myo Paw ward in Kyaukphyu township, as well as in 18 village tracts, including the Kachsapa ward in Sittwe township.
The Myanmar Election Commission has declared that elections will occur solely in the remaining three towns: Sittwe, Kyaukphyu, and Munaung townships, as the Arakan Army (AA) has taken control of 14 out of the 17 townships in Rakhine State.
