Kyaw Moe Tun assumes role as rotating chair of UN Asia-Pacific group

Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, the Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations, is serving as the rotating chairperson of the UN Asia-Pacific Group for the month of September, according to a statement released by the Permanent Mission of Myanmar.

The Asia-Pacific Group comprises 55 UN member states from the Asia and Pacific regions, with member states taking turns to assume the rotating chairmanship. Myanmar has taken on the rotating chair duties for September 2026.

In his capacity as rotating chair, Kyaw Moe Tun attended a UN memorial ceremony on the morning of 14 September to mark the passing of King Harald V of Norway, who died on 28 August, where he delivered commemorative remarks on behalf of the Asia-Pacific Group.

It is understood that the rotating chairs of the respective UN regional groups traditionally attend such ceremonies to deliver commemorative speeches.

During the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Kyaw Moe Tun attended and delivered speeches at open meetings of the UN Security Council, meetings of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and sessions of their subsidiary bodies.

The Permanent Mission of Myanmar also said he participated and spoke at regular meetings of UN-affiliated agencies, meetings focusing on development, children, women, and girls, as well as various side events.

According to the statement, Kyaw Moe Tun delivered over 80 speeches in his capacity as Permanent Representative of Myanmar throughout the 80th UN General Assembly.
