Remarks about Myanmar by Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on daily press briefing
In daily press briefing on 21 April 2022, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric said that the colleagues on the ground say they remain alarmed by the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Myanmar, where civilians continue to suffer because of the continued fighting in the north-west and south-east of the country.
He mentioned that aid workers are worried about the shelter situation for many Rohingya who are internally displaced and confined to camps across Rakhine State.
He said that hundreds of buildings in the camps are in dire need of repair, leaving more than 28,000 displaced men, women and children living in perilous conditions.
Dujarric said that the U.N. needs to urgently bridge a funding gap of $4.7 million to repair those structures, and their humanitarian colleagues stress it is critical that voluntary and durable solutions are found so people can exercise their rights, have freedom of movement and resume their lives.

Myanmar: ASEAN’s Failed ‘5-Point Consensus’ a Year On
Southeast Asian governments should urgently revamp their response to Myanmar’s abusive junta by coordinating action with the broader international community, Human Rights Watch said on 22 April 2022.
Despite adopting a “five-point consensus” on the crisis a year ago, the ASEAN has failed to fulfill its pledges or take meaningful steps toward pressing the junta to end its human rights violations.
Leading ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, should work closely with other governments to develop a clear, timebound approach to press Myanmar’s junta toward reform.
US President Joe Biden, who will host ASEAN members at a summit in May, should press ASEAN leaders to abandon their failed consensus approach and encourage greater cooperation with other countries promoting stronger action against the junta’s rights abuses.

ASEAN’s Five-Point Failure
The ASEAN Five-Point Consensus reached between ASEAN leaders and the leader of the Myanmar military is a failure, with no significant progress made towards its implementation after twelve months, says the Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SAC-M).
“The junta has not held to a single point of the Five-Point Consensus. The agreement has failed and a change of course from ASEAN is needed,” said Marzuki Darusman of SAC-M.
“The ASEAN Five-Point Consensus failed because ASEAN engaged with the wrong party,” said Yanghee Lee of SAC-M. “The NUG represents Myanmar and is the proper party to lead engagement with ASEAN. The NUG has demonstrated that it is the constructive partner that ASEAN needs to make any progress towards resolving the crisis.”

International community must do more to protect brave protesters
Myanmar’s brave activists are still pursuing peaceful protests despite grave danger and numerous challenges, Amnesty International said on 22 April 2022, one year after the ASEAN adopted Five-Point Consensus that has abjectly failed to stop the violence in the country.
“These activists urgently need the support of the international community in the form of a global arms embargo to stop the Myanmar military from using weapons of warfare to kill peaceful protesters,” said Emerlynne Gil, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for Research.

Help for Ukraine but little for Myanmar
There are many similarities between the war in Ukraine and the civil conflict in Myanmar. There are urgent humanitarian concerns in both countries, but the grave suffering in one has been greatly overshadowed by the other.
Western nations have rallied to support Ukraine, with arms and help for its millions of refugees, but the people of Myanmar have received far less.
So the cries for help by millions in Myanmar have been ignored, and with far less media coverage, there is just lip service on helping their struggle. Lip service won’t bring change. The people of Myanmar need support, like the people in Ukraine. Both are suffering an invasion by brutal forces. The European Union and the US need to consider that the people of Myanmar are humans, also fighting for independence, and they deserve just a small proportion of what has been given to Ukraine.

Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing calls for peace talks with ethnic rebels
Myanmar's junta chief on April 22 called for face-to-face peace talks with the country's established ethnic rebel groups, as the military struggles to crush newer anti-junta militias that have sprung up to fight the coup.
"I invite leaders of ethnic armed groups for dialogue," junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said in an address on state media, calling for representatives to register by May 9 and adding he would meet them personally.

Myanmar Exempts Most Foreigners From Currency Conversion Rule
Myanmar’s military government exempted most overseas nationals and entities from compulsorily converting foreign currencies into kyat after international push back over the move.
Businesses in the nation’s three special economic zones are exempted from the April 4 order on currency conversion, according to a statement from the Central Bank of Myanmar. The waiver will also apply for diplomats and their families, foreigners working for embassies, the United Nations and other development agencies and international civil society groups.

Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup
According to AAPP documentation, at least (547) houses and buildings have been sealed off by the Junta since the 2021 coup up until March 2022.
As of April 22, 2022, (1782) people are now confirmed killed by this junta coup. AAPP compiled and documented (3) fallen heroes today. These (3) fallen heroes from Tabayin Township in Sagaing Region were killed on previous days and documented today. This is the number verified by AAPP.
As of April 22, 2022, a total of (10290) people are currently under detention. (999) people have been sentenced in person; of them 59 have been sentenced to death (incl. 2 children). 1977 are evading arrest warrants. 120 people have been sentenced in absentia, of them 41 sentenced to death in absentia. In total 100 sentenced to death, in person and absentia.
