A meeting of the Yangon region committee for summoning people's military servants will be held on 3 March at government run Mingalar hall aiming to detain more young people for engaging in military services.
The meeting was called by director Win Zaw Naing, where the Yangon region civil service commission and other organizations will coordinate the efforts to catch more people for the military services, a reliable source informed Narinjara News.
“Every father and mother should be careful. In the future, more young men can be drafted for military services. Yangon region’s top official U Soe Thein will attend the program. Yangon region military command’s dy commander brigadier general Tun Tun Oo will also attend the same,” the source added.
Colonel Win Tint (minister for security and border affairs in Rangoon region), colonel Thein Htike Oo (commanding officer in Rangoon region military command) and Rangoon region police chief Ko Ko Lwin will also grace the occasion.
“This meeting is very important. There are reports that the males between the ages of 19 and 45 will be invited for military services. The conscription of female military personnel will also be discussed. It is also assumed that strong actions will be taken against those who received bribes in the conscription process,” stated the source.
The meeting is supposed to witness the participation of a number of chairmen from district and township-level conscription committees along with minister U Htay Aung, regional attorney-general Daw Phyu Ma Wai, secretary U Ne Win Aung and Yangon public service commission head U Maung Maung Than.
Earlier on 26 February, a meeting was organized at the central military commission office, where Maj Gen Maung Maung Aye commented that every citizen is responsible for the defense of their nation and hence the qualified individuals must serve in the military.
A Yangon resident informed, lately there has been an increase in the number of porters and conscriptions, especially in the suburbs and on the outskirts of the city. Many arrests were also reported in recent days.
The Rakhine (Arakanese) youths are primarily targeted in these meetings for the process of conscription. Recently, a 19-year-old Rakhine youth, who was studying at Dagon University in Yangon, was taken away for engaging in military services.
Thousands of Rakhine youths in Yangon, who fled the war affected Rakhine localities to arrive in Yangon, were already picked up for military services. Their family members are often scared of discussing the issue.
According to a military source, the number of military personnel who graduated from the 19th conscription courses exceeds 100,000. Moreover, the number of deserters and victims will be around a few thousands.
