Two former generals from the military’s proxy Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) will lead Myanmar’s Lower House, which convened in Naypyitaw on Monday for the first parliamentary session since the 2021 coup.
USDP Chairman Khin Yi was elected speaker of the Lower House or Pyithu Hluttaw, while fellow party member Maung Maung Ohn was appointed deputy speaker.
The new parliament was formed by a military-organized election in December and January that was rigged to exclude any serious opposition parties, while a quarter of the seats went to uniformed soldiers under the military-written 2008 Constitution.
