Myanmar’s US dollar exchange rate climbed to 4,600 kyat on 14 October amid fallout from problems in the country’s high-end condominium market, as the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Exiled Myanmar Journalists Network (Exiled-MJN) condemned the junta’s attempt to seek INTERPOL Red Notices against five independent media outlets, including Mizzima. Internationally, Pope Leo XIV underwent lung cancer surgery, Thailand tightened airport baggage-inspection rules, and China sanctioned officials from Paraguay and Belize over their ties with Taiwan.

Myanmar Economy and Currency Market

The US dollar exchange rate in Myanmar rose by more than 200 kyat within a few days, following problems in the country’s high-end condominium market. The market rate stood at 4,495 kyat per US dollar on 12 October, rose to 4,520 kyat on 13 October, and reached 4,600 kyat on 14 October, reflecting a further decline in the value of the kyat.

Myanmar Affairs and International Diplomacy

The IFJ and Exiled-MJN strongly condemned attempts by Myanmar’s military authorities to seek INTERPOL Red Notices against five independent media organizations, including Mizzima.

Assessment

Wednesday’s developments show two currents converging on Myanmar. At home, the kyat’s sharp slide to 4,600 per dollar tied to turmoil in the high-end property market adds financial strain even as the junta faces growing international censure for attempting to use INTERPOL against independent media, including Mizzima itself, a move press-freedom groups and Myanmar’s own UN envoy both condemned. Beyond Myanmar, a Pope’s cancer surgery, tightened Thai airport security, labour-driven crop losses, and the Ukraine-Russia war underscore how global health, security and economic currents continue to run alongside the country’s own political and economic crisis.
