AA Info Desk / Arakan Army troops capture junta bases on the Ayeyarwady front in June 2026.

Clashes between Myanmar’s military junta and the Arakan Army (AA) on the outskirts of the Rakhine State capital, Sittwe, are rapidly escalating, with intense fighting spreading to Yaychanpyin Village, according to military and local sources.

The conflict has intensified as the AA shifts from defensive postures to active offensives targeting Sittwe, prompting the regime to launch amphibious assaults on Ngapyi Island in Werathani Township.

During these operations, AA forces successfully captured nine junta outposts across Amyint Kyun and Yaychanpyin villages near the strategic junction connecting Sittwe, Ponnagyun, and Rathedaung townships.

Captured positions include the Amyint Kyun police station along the Sittwe–Ponnagyun border, and roadblocks leading into Sittwe.

However, military sources noted that ongoing junta airstrikes and heavy artillery bombardments continue to complicate full ground consolidation as AA troops advance toward the city center.

Fighting is currently concentrated across at least six fronts—including Yaychanpyin, Minchaung Bridge, and Amyint Kyun—involving close-quarters combat, drone strikes, and heavy artillery exchanges.

In response to the AA's multi-pronged push, the regime is rapidly deploying reinforcements and heavily relying on air support.

According to military defector Captain Zin Yaw, junta troops belonging to the 101st Light Infantry Division, which had advanced toward Ponnagyun’s Kuntaung Village since September, have fully retreated to Amyint Kyun as coordinated AA offensives hit Amyint Kyun Bridge, Minchaung Bridge, and Wahbo village.

An analysis by the Institute for Strategy and Policy - Myanmar (ISP-Myanmar) underscores the critical strategic importance of the Arakan front to the regime, warning that operations there are likely to grow increasingly brutal.

Meanwhile, analysts view the AA's coordinated advance as the opening phase of the battle for control of Sittwe; the daily junta airstrikes across surrounding townships like Rathedaung, Ponnagyun, and Werathani continue to mount a heavy civilian toll.
