Myanmar–Thailand Security Cooperation

Myanmar military Chief of Defence Staff General Ye Win Oo met a Thai delegation led by Mr. Chatchai Bangchuad, Secretary-General of Thailand’s National Security Council, on 27 August.

The Thai delegation also included the Deputy Secretary-General of the National Security Council and the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Armed Forces.

The two sides discussed cooperation concerning online crime, arms and ammunition, narcotics and controlled chemical substances.

The meeting reflects continuing security engagement between the Myanmar military authorities and Thailand, particularly on transnational crime and other security challenges affecting the border and wider region.

Armed Robbery Reported in Mawlamyine

Three men reportedly carried out an armed robbery at the “Ko Ko and Nyi Nyi” electrical appliance shop in Mawlamyine early on the morning of 28 August.

The men allegedly threatened those at the shop with firearms and took away a safe.

Police under the military authorities inspected the scene and conducted inquiries, but no suspects had been arrested at the time of reporting.

Daily Assessment

The developments highlight two contrasting security issues in Myanmar: continued high-level cooperation between Myanmar and Thai security authorities on transnational crime, while domestic communities continue to face everyday law-and-order concerns, including armed robbery.

The Myanmar–Thailand talks are particularly significant given the growing regional focus on online scam operations, illicit weapons, narcotics and chemical controls, all of which increasingly require cross-border cooperation.
