Mounting anxiety over intense overnight gunfire has triggered an exodus of residents from the Rakhine State capital to Yangon, while strict government aid blocks have left low-income daily wage earners in several neighborhoods facing severe hunger.
Local residents report that the sound of heavy artillery and weapons firing continuously throughout the night from the outskirts of Sittwe has driven panic through the city. The sudden surge in departures has already caused local airfares to Yangon to spike.
However, locals emphasize that the most critical crisis unfolding is a rapidly growing food shortage.
Low-income families and daily wage earners in neighborhoods including Kathe, Set Yone Su, Dhanyawadi, Min Gan, Kan Taw Gyi, and Ywar Thar Yar are reportedly on the brink of starvation.
The humanitarian crisis is being severely exacerbated by strict administrative restrictions. Under regulations imposed by the military-installed Rakhine State government, led by Chief Minister U Naing Oo, all domestic and international humanitarian aid must be funneled exclusively through government channels.
According to local sources, this bottleneck effectively blocks independent donors from delivering urgent relief to vulnerable populations, while the administration itself has failed to provide any alternative assistance to the city's impoverished communities.
