Refugee Killed in Myanmar Navy Shelling in Kyaukphyu

A young refugee sheltering in Paukpyin village, Kyaukphyu Township, was killed on Friday when a Myanmar Navy vessel opened fire on the area.

The victim is identified as Ko Moe Htet Paing (24), a displaced resident of Kan Pyin Ward in Sane Town.

On the morning of May 29, the Myanmar Navy, stationed on the Thanzi River below the Taung Maw Gyi Naval Base, fired at least five artillery shells at Paukpyin village.

Several shells struck the home of U Ye Htun Naing, where Ko Moe Htet Paing was seeking shelter. According to locals, Ko Moe Htet Paing was struck in the left ear by shrapnel and died instantly.

Ko Naing Htun Lin, chairman of the Zin Chaung Youth Association, noted that the village is located approximately six or seven miles from the navy position. The explosions also caused significant damage to U Ye Htun Naing's home and several other houses in the village.

This shelling follows a string of deadly military attacks on civilian areas in the region.

On May 26, the Burmese military attacked neighborhoods in Sane Town, killing 87-year-old U Maung Shwe Sein and destroying numerous homes.

On May 19, the Taung Maw Gyi Navy base bombed the Shwe Hin Thar Ward in Sanay Township, destroying over 100 houses.

Intense clashes are currently taking place between the military junta and the Arakan Army (AA) near the Taung Maw Gyi waterfront, with junta forces reportedly suffering heavy casualties.

Local residents state that as military troops lose ground, they have increasingly resorted to shelling and bombing nearby villages like Sane and Paukpyin, resulting in a rising number of civilian casualties and structural damage.
