Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, President-elect of Belarus and Head of the United Transitional Cabinet, had an important message to say at the opening ceremony of the 30th Forum 2000 Conference in Prague on 11 October.

“We must learn a very simple truth: dictators can’t be appeased. And when you do that – you only strengthen them,” she said.

“Believe me, dictators don’t want peace, because war it’s what fuels their regimes, justify terror, and keep them in power.

“Dictators understand only the language of strength. And it is high time for democracy to show its teeth.

“Not to prolong the war. But to force Putin into real negotiations to bring real and lasting peace.

“While we isolate dictators, we must never forget the people — those doing the invisible, daily work that keeps our societies alive.

“Journalists who tell the truth. Activists who build communities. Human rights defenders who document crimes. Artists who protect our identity.

“When regimes try to silence them, we must make their voices louder.”
