The Arakan Army (AA) seized five Myanmar military outposts in western Myanmar's Arakan (Rakhine) State between October 9 and 15, while the state recorded the highest number of military airstrike incidents targeting civilians nationwide, according to a new report by Nyan Lynn Thit Analytica (NLTA).
The research organisation's weekly At a Glance: On Armed Struggles report said AA forces captured the five outposts in Sittwe, Kyaukphyu and Pauktaw townships on October 9, 10, 11, 14 and 15.
The reported gains came amid intensified fighting between the AA, an ethnic armed organisation that controls large parts of Arakan, and Myanmar's military regime.
NLTA documented seven military airstrike incidents targeting civilians in Arakan during the reporting period, the highest number recorded in any state or region.
On October 10, a military airstrike on a village in Pauktaw Township reportedly killed nine civilians and injured 17 others, according to the report.
Across all incidents classified as attacks targeting civilians, Arakan recorded nine deaths and 23 injuries, the second-highest civilian casualty toll nationwide during the week.
Sagaing Region recorded the highest toll, with 10 civilians killed and 32 injured, while Mon State recorded eight deaths and 10 injuries.
Nationwide, NLTA documented at least 145 incidents involving military operations and attacks targeting civilians between October 9 and 15. These comprised 64 military-operation incidents and 81 incidents classified as attacks targeting civilians.
The 81 civilian-targeted attack incidents, recorded across 46 townships, resulted in at least 37 civilian deaths, 78 injuries and 37 arbitrary arrests, the report said.
Military airstrikes accounted for 25 of those incidents across 19 townships in seven states and regions, killing 21 civilians and injuring 55 others.
The report also recorded 13 military raids on villages, resulting in one civilian death, two injuries and 23 arrests.
Separately, NLTA documented 64 military-operation incidents across 34 townships, including 50 combat engagements. Magway Region recorded the highest number of military-operation incidents, with 13.
According to NLTA, military-operation incidents increased compared with the previous week, while the number of attacks classified as targeting civilians declined.
NLTA said its findings were compiled from reports by 43 news media outlets and statements issued by armed resistance organisations. It cautioned that actual figures could be higher because unverified incidents and casualties were excluded.
DMG could not independently verify all the reported incidents and casualty figures.
