Phase 3 of Junta’s Election Brings Forward Ministers, Military Heirs and Party Chiefs

As the military junta pushes ahead with the third and final phase of its staged election on Jan. 25, the candidate list reveals a familiar pattern: current junta ministers, party chairmen, children of ex‑generals and even a former sex‑education vlogger.

The vote will take place across 63 townships in nine states and regions—Kachin, Karen, Sagaing, Tanintharyi, Bago, Mandalay, Yangon, Shan and Ayeyarwady—many of which are still experiencing active airstrikes and ground assaults by the junta.
