Nearly 20 IDPs Killed by Junta Forces During Winwa Camp Battle

Around 20 bodies of displaced civilians killed by junta troops were discovered during clearance operations following the Winwa camp battle in Thayetchaung Township, Tanintharyi Region.

The Winwa military camp located on the Myeik- Dawei No.8 Union Highway has been undergoing clearance operations since its capture on March 11th, after KNLA and allied resistance forces launched an attack on February 7th.

During these clearance operations near Winwa camp, bodies believed to be displaced civilians, were found in plantations and on the main road with gunshot and stab wounds, a Tanintharyi Region People’s Defence Force spokesperson said.

“The exact number is unclear, but about 20 people may have been killed. Some were shot after meeting junta troops, and some were found dead on the road,” according to Ko Joker, spokesperson from the Tanintharyi Region People’s Defence Force.

He added that they are still searching for and finding the bodies of local civilians who were killed.

Clashes are ongoing as resistance forces continue to pursue fleeing junta troops after seizing the Winwa camp, while the military is carrying out daily airstrikes.

He also said that the blocked Myeik–Dawei section of the No. 8, Union Highway and cut phone lines will be restored as soon as possible after clearance operations are completed.

“We are clearing out junta troops who fled from the Winwa camp. Once that is done, we plan to reopen the roads and restore internet access. For now, roads are closed, and the internet is down due to the security situation. We will arrange it as soon as clearance operations are finished,” Ko Joker added.

Residents from about 20 villages in Thayetchaung Township were displaced in early February. Despite more than a month of fighting, those displaced lack aid, and are returning to unsafe villages to collect food. Some people remain missing, according to those assisting the internally displaced population.
