SITTWE (Narinjara), Oct. 8, 2026

The Myanmar junta military launched a major land, air, and naval offensive against Ngapyi Kyunt Island in the Kaladan River on Wednesday evening but was forced to retreat after failing to breach the island’s defenses.

An Arakan Army (AA) military source told Narinjara that junta forces dropped approximately 50 bombs on the island using a Y-12 aircraft, while naval vessels unleashed heavy artillery to clear the way for a troop landing.

Despite the intense bombardment, AA forces returned fire, successfully blocking the junta's attempts to reach the shore.

"The assault began yesterday evening, October 7," the AA source stated. "They heavily targeted the island from the air and sea, but the military was ultimately unable to land and withdrew."

Ngapyi Kyunt Island, located in Pauktaw Township near Sittwe's Shwe Min Gan naval base, holds critical strategic value. Analysts note that as the AA advances its ground offensive toward the Sittwe military command, the junta desperately launched this operation hoping to secure a vital strategic foothold.

Local military sources report that fierce clashes are ongoing on the outskirts of Sittwe, including near Shwe Min Gan and A-Myint Kyunt village. Faced with intense pressure from the AA, the Myanmar military has already been forced to abandon multiple key outposts in the area.
