Myanmar Military Airstrike in Gwa Township Injures Four

Three IDPs and a local resident, a total of four civilians, were injured in an airstrike by the Myanmar military junta on Nyaung Chaung Village in Gwa Township, southern Arakan State.

The injured individuals were identified as U Saw Oo, Chan Myay Aung, Daw Ma Than Win, and 76-year-old U Tin Shwe, three of whom are displaced refugees from the Ayeyarwady Region.

According to a local resident, the injuries occurred when the military air forces struck Nyaung Chaung Village at around 5:00 AM today, August 21. The bombardment also caused damage to several houses.

Lacking the capacity to defeat the Arakan Army (AA) on the ground, the Myanmar military has increasingly relied on air power. The junta faces widespread accusations of deliberately targeting civilian areas with these aerial assaults.

Earlier today at approximately 2:00 AM, the military deployed jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft to bomb Ngapali town in Thandwe Township. Investigations are currently underway to determine the extent of any casualties from that attack.

This strike follows a pattern of recent aerial bombardments across the region.

On the night of August 13, the junta bombed Kaing Khon Village in Kyintali town, Gwa Township, killing eight civilians.

Additionally, the Arakan Army (AA) News and Information Service reported that a military airstrike on Kyauk Gyi Village in Thandwe Township on August 10 left 16 people dead and 18 others injured.
