Military junta forces have further escalated transit restrictions at the Thibaw (Hsipaw) Bridge along the Thibaw-Lashio Highway in northern Shan State, prohibiting pedestrians and foot traffic after previously banning all motor vehicles.

The regime initially closed the bridge to vehicular traffic in November 2025.

While pedestrians were previously allowed to cross on foot with personal belongings, junta troops stationed at both ends of the bridge have now restricted pedestrian crossings entirely on certain days or barred travelers from carrying market baskets and baggage.

"Even if you are allowed to walk across, carrying any bags or packages is strictly prohibited," a local trader reported, noting that troops frequently halt pedestrian flow under the pretext of VIP security routes.

With the main crossing blocked, residents had to cross the Dokhtawaddy (Myitnge) River taking small motorized ferries, paying 5,000 MMK per person and 10,000 MMK per motorcycle.

Local sources report that junta officers are collecting kickbacks from ferry operators, suggesting financial extortion may be driving the heightened restrictions.

The blockade has severely disrupted local supply chains and delayed emergency medical transfers to hospitals in Lashio, forcing travelers bound for Lashio and Muse to take lengthy detours via Kyaukme.

While junta troops retain control of the bridge itself, key stretches of the Union Highway between Thibaw and Lashio remain under the control of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA).
