Myanmar junta rebuff’s ASEAN Chair’s statement, dismisses call for Aung San Suu Kyi’s release

Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on 8 August taking offence at the ASEAN Chair’s “interference” in the incarceration of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi and calling for an end to the new Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair.

The following is the statement:

​The meeting of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi with Mr. Arnaud de Baecque, Resident Representative of the ICRC was held on 3 August 2026. The said meeting was conducted in accordance with the existing laws and regulations of Myanmar, as well as the standards and procedures of the ICRC. Following the said meeting, it is learned that an ASEAN Chair’s Statement was issued on 7 August 2026.

​While Myanmar acknowledges the positive elements contained in the statement, it is disappointed to note that certain language and the calls contained therein do not reflect the constructive efforts undertaken by the Member State concerned. In particular, the calls for “further expansion of access to persons held in detention in Myanmar” and “Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s complete and unconditional release” carry implications for the relevant judicial process and the fundamental principles of the rule of law in a sovereign State. As she was found guilty of committing electoral fraud, corruption and maladministration, prosecution was carried out against her in accordance with the law. Although the government has commuted her sentences based on humanitarian considerations, the matter of a full and unconditional release shall only be carried out in accordance with the law.
