According to the Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC), the military junta carried out an airstrike on the afternoon of 4 March, targeting a neighbourhood sheltering internally displaced persons (IDPs) near Cherry Gone Market in the western part of Demoso Township, Karenni State. The attack injured a woman and destroyed several houses.
“The area hit by the junta’s bombing is home to more than 80% IDPs. After the airstrike, the junta also fired at least twenty artillery shells into the neighbourhood. Some of the shells landed on a hillside, igniting a fire,” said IEC Secretary 2, U Banyar Khun Aung.
Karenni State hosts over 300,000 IDPs, more than 65,000 reside in Demoso Township alone.
