Military Tensions Surge Around Momeik Following Seizure of Strategic Outpost
Military tensions remain heightened around Momeik (Mongmit) Town in northern Shan State after a joint resistance offensive overran a junta military camp, triggering retaliatory airstrikes and prompting widespread civilian displacement.
On the morning of September 28, a joint force comprising the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the People’s Defence Force (PDF) launched an assault on a hilltop outpost at the Shwemyintin Pagoda site near Nyaungni Village, located roughly three miles from Momeik Town.
Sources close to the KIA confirmed that resistance forces captured at least five junta soldiers alive, recovered several bodies, and seized weapons and ammunition.
Following the loss of the position, the military regime deployed fighter jets, attack helicopters, and Y-12 utility aircraft to carry out airstrikes across Nyaungni Village and the outskirts of Momeik.
The aerial bombardment forced local residents and villagers around the pagoda site to flee to safer areas.
In response to the setback, junta forces deployed reinforcements from neighboring Mogok Town in Mandalay Region and instituted road blockades along the Mogok-Momeik highway, severely restricting local movement and emergency medical access.
"People are fleeing for safety as aircraft dropped bombs across Nyaungni," a Momeik resident said. A resistance-linked source added that ground fighting has drawn closer to the Shwezarli Bridge at the entrance to Momeik Town, raising fears among residents that full-scale urban combat could erupt.
Concurrently, the military regime has conducted airstrikes around Myitsone Village near the border between Momeik and Mabein townships.
Junta columns are attempting to push toward Mabein to secure territory near the northern bank of the Ruili (Shweli) River, where resistance forces continue to maintain a defense line.
Momeik Town was briefly controlled by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) before being handed back to junta administration in October 2025.
While regime forces maintain control of the town center, a complex mix of armed groups—including the KIA, PDF, and the Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA)—remains active throughout Momeik Township, keeping the region in a state of high volatility.
