The military government intends to initiate the redevelopment of a project aimed at constructing two reservoirs, estimated to cost approximately Ks 4 billion, in Kyaukphyu, located on Madae Island in Rakhine State, which is known for hosting Chinese gas and oil projects.
Local social activists in Kyaukphyu state that the reservoirs are meant for the deep-sea port that the Chinese government aims to construct in Kyaukphyu in order to exert influence over the Indian Ocean.
In spite of the intense conflict occurring between the AA and the junta in Kyaukphyu Township, the junta intends to renovate the two reservoirs, referred to as Kyauktan (1) and Kyauktan (2).
