On 3 November, Kim Aris, the son of imprisoned democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, issued a statement from London expressing heartfelt gratitude to President Emmanuel Macron, the Government of France, and the people of France for their steadfast support for Myanmar’s struggle for freedom, democracy, and human rights.
The text of the statement continues below.
Kim Aris, son of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, expresses his profound gratitude to President Emmanuel Macron, the Government of France, and the people of France for their enduring support and compassion toward the struggle for freedom, democracy, and human rights in Burma.
During a recent meeting with Mr. Christian LECHERVY, Special Envoy for Myanmar, Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Government, Kim received a personal letter from President Macron addressed to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. In his message, President Macron conveyed his deep concern about her deteriorating health and the lack of access to appropriate medical care during her unjust detention, a situation France has consistently and publicly condemned.
President Macron reaffirmed France’s call for the immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint, and all political prisoners detained since the military coup of February 1, 2021. He also reiterated France’s unwavering support for the democratic and federal aspirations of the Burmese people, the restoration of the rule of law, and the peaceful development of Burma.
As a nation with a long history of defending liberty, France once again demonstrated its commitment to stand beside the Burmese people in their pursuit of freedom, dignity, and peace.
