Karen midwives honoured on International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

August 9th marks the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, a celebration of Indigenous cultures, traditions, knowledge, and their vital role in protecting and caring for nature, according to the Karen Environmental and Social Action Network.

This year, we honor our Indigenous Karen midwives, whose knowledge and care for our newborn have safeguarded the wellbeing of our communities for generations. We are committed to passing on these traditional practices so that our Karen youth are able to continue to strengthen this part of our culture and heritage.

In Kawthoolei, despite ongoing threats from the Burmese military government and the Global Climate Crisis, Indigenous Karen communities continue to safeguard themselves and their unique relationship with nature.

Their stewardship demonstrates the important role Indigenous peoples play in safeguarding nature and sustaining their lands for future generations.

Indigenous peoples like us continue to face challenges, including threats to their rights, lands, cultures, and ways of life. On this day, we recognize, respect, and promote the rights of our fellow Indigenous peoples and vow to continue to protect our communities, cultures, and natural environment with equality, dignity, and justice.
