Myanmar’s junta-appointed Union Election Commission (UEC) announced on Wednesday night that it will take action against Daw Thet Thet Khine, chief of the People’s Pioneer Party and a former regime minister, along with party Central Executive Committee member Daw Htet Htet Naing, for allegedly meeting with representatives of a foreign embassy without the commission’s approval.
The announcement came hours after regime authorities detained the pair at Daw Htet Htet Khine’s house and took them away for interrogation. Party officials told the media that both women had returned to their homes on Wednesday night after being interrogated.
The UEC said it had received a report that Daw Thet Thet Khine and Daw Htet Htet Naing, wearing facemasks, held a “secret” meeting with representatives of a foreign embassy at a restaurant on Natmauk Street in Yangon on Dec. 12.
