Rights group Justice for Myanmar (JFM) said on Wednesday that its investigation showed Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing’s family had purchased a luxury residence worth US$3 million in the Issara Residence Rama 9 development in Bangkok, bypassing Thai laws prohibiting foreigners from owning land or houses in the country.
The purchase of the residence by the junta boss’s family also flies in the face of the regime’s purported attempt to crack down on the sale and purchase of Thai condominiums by Myanmar nationals.
In 2024, the regime arrested four Myanmar nationals for selling and buying Thai condominiums, accusing them of creating instability in Myanmar’s currency markets and of opening Thai bank accounts without permission from the Central Bank of Myanmar.
