The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) announced on October 12 that the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in Arusha, Tanzania, approved a resolution to maintain recognition of the CRPH as a key dialogue partner, alongside a resolution regarding unlawfully detained elected parliamentarians from Myanmar.

A Myanmar parliamentary delegation led by Union Parliament Representative Zin Mar Aung attended the assembly, which took place from October 5 to 9.

The Myanmar delegation participated in the Governing Council meetings, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, and discussions on climate issues. On the fourth day of the assembly, Zin Mar Aung delivered a speech during the general debate under the theme “Promoting Good Governance through Inclusion, Trust, and Opportunity for All, and Empowering Communities.”

Additionally, Zin Mar Aung took part in a discussion focused on “Climate Disasters, Good Governance, and Climate Investment.” The Myanmar delegation also held bilateral meetings with parliamentary delegations from various participating countries to brief them on the situation in Myanmar.

According to the CRPH statement, during the Governing Council meeting on the fifth day of the assembly, the IPU reaffirmed its decision to maintain the CRPH as a key dialogue partner. Furthermore, a decision concerning the situation of unlawfully detained elected Myanmar parliamentarians was officially approved.

During the event, Zin Mar Aung also expressed her congratulations to Mr. Milton Dick, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, on his election as the new President of the IPU.

Throughout the assembly, the Myanmar delegation presented the public service delivery efforts of the National Unity Government (NUG) and the legislative work being carried out by the CRPH and elected members of parliament. They placed primary emphasis on ensuring that the international parliamentary community continues to recognize the CRPH and the parliamentarians elected in the 2020 general election.

The CRPH also stated that measures were taken to widely inform the international community about the political positions, objectives, and activities of the Steering Committee for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF), which comprises elected Myanmar parliamentarians.

Furthermore, key efforts focused on preventing international recognition of any parliament or governmental body that the military junta attempts to form through its planned elections, calling for an immediate end to violence including airstrikes and ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches the people of Myanmar in urgent need.
