Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, a man who has spent the past five years dragging Myanmar into an endless abyss, was awarded an honorary doctorate in public administration by Yangon University on Thursday. Public reaction has ranged from disbelief to outright disgust, with many wondering whether the university had confused “public administration” with “public annihilation.”
Junta Education Minister Dr. Chaw Chaw Sein insisted the award recognized the junta boss’s “leadership” in steering the nation through political upheaval. In a lengthy tribute, she credited him with everything from “managing economic sanctions” to “successfully holding elections” and even “building a giant pagoda in Naypyitaw.”
But the praise did not end there; the minister extolled her boss’s “personal sacrifices” for the country and his many “outstanding” achievements. Needless to say, she did not mention that these “achievements” include the fact that 3.6 million people have been internally displaced since his coup and over 15 million face acute food insecurity, according to a recent report by Human Rights Watch.
