German Chargé d’Affaires Mathias Licharz took time out on 19 July to mark Martyrs’ Day in Yangon, speaking in front of a statue of the late General Aung San,

The following is his statement:

Mingalabar.

Martyr’s Day on 19th July is being celebrated in Myanmar. We mark General Aung San and 8 martyr leaders who have fallen with the people of Myanmar. Martyr leaders sacrificed their lives while struggling for Myanmar’s freedom and a better future.

Their bravery and dedication to the country remains an inspiration to many today. Myanmar’s rich history has shaped the future of the country. Instead of using this historical process for personal gain, we should learn a lesson.

In this period where Myanmar continues to face many challenges, Martyrs’ Day reminds us of the peace, freedom, unity and hope for a better future that the people of Myanmar have long been hoping for.

I deeply honour the historical legacy of the martyr leaders. In addition, I would like to reaffirm Germany’s long-standing friendship and solidarity towards the people of Myanmar.
