A multifaith prayer service was held by Burmese communities in Japan on Sunday to mark Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 81st birthday, organizers told Narinjara.
The service took place on June 14 at the Gotemba Peace Pagoda (known to the Burmese community as the U Nu Pagoda) in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
During the event, the assistant abbot of Satori Vihara offered prayers according to Buddhist tradition. Additionally, Karen nationals Ko Saw Gyi and Ko Nyi Nyi offered prayers for her health according to Christian and Islamic traditions, respectively.
Attendees also prayed for her speedy release from arbitrary detention by the military junta. Following the prayers, several community leaders urged everyone to work together for Myanmar's democracy, including ethnic representative U Saw Ba Hla Thein, NLD Organizing Committee Chairman U Thaung Myint Oo, Myanmar League for Democracy (Japan) Chairman U Hlaing Aye, and ANDP-Japan General Secretary Ko Than Myint.
