Across Myanmar, forced-recruitment arrests, airstrikes and worsening security conditions continued by region on 24 August, while former political prisoners in resistance-held territory face growing hardship in daily life. Meanwhile, as the ninth anniversary of the military’s 2017 operation against the Rohingya is marked, the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) has warned that justice has still not been delivered. Security, weather and humanitarian developments also continued along the Thailand–Myanmar border and across the region.

Revolutionary Politics and Military Affairs

Around 20 political prisoners freed from Lashio Prison during Operation 1027 have reportedly returned to military-controlled territory after facing severe food, health and security difficulties in liberated areas, according to the Justice Network for Political Prisoners (JNPP).

In Sagaing town, residents said women have increasingly taken over drinking-water delivery work previously done mainly by men as the military regime continues forced-recruitment arrests day and night.

In a village in Chaung-U Township, members of a Pyusawhti militia reportedly arrested four local residents, including two members of Monywa District’s 5+1 unit and the village’s abbot, according to local sources close to resistance forces.

In Sweleai village, Myaung Township, up to 15 people were reportedly killed after the military carried out an airstrike on a Buddhist meditation retreat.

Naga political figure and civil society activist Thomas Shipwon said the Naga people have historically stood as a distinct ethnic group with their own language, culture and political identity.

Separately, a video released today shows that the first basic military training course conducted by Battalion 8003, under Tanintharyi Regional Military Command’s Strategic Command 33, has been completed in Dawei District.

Domestic Social and Health Issues

The experience of political prisoners released from Lashio Prison illustrates how critical access to food, healthcare and security support is for people living in resistance-held territory.

Meanwhile, a Cambridge University study examining the link between drug use and stroke found that use of substances including cannabis, cocaine and amphetamines significantly raises stroke risk across all age groups. The study was based on data from more than 100 million people.

Economy and Environment

Meteorological authorities have warned that rain will continue across Myanmar due to a strong monsoon and storm systems, with floodwaters expected to recede slowly in Laymyethna Township. In Thailand, the Meteorological Department has warned of thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, with heavy rain expected in isolated areas of the north, upper northeast, central and eastern regions.

Thailand and the Region

Following more than 50 security incidents on the night of 22 August in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces — Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani — Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul convened an emergency meeting with senior security officials.

In Thailand’s Kamphaeng Phet Province, police arrested two Thai nationals accused of kidnapping a Chinese woman, binding her hands with cable ties and taking her toward the Myanmar border.

A waterfall in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Phetchaburi Province, was temporarily closed after heavy rain caused flash flooding and rockfalls.

In India’s Mizoram State, authorities reportedly seized 10 firearms and 2,059 rounds of ammunition believed to have been transported from Myanmar between 3 and 23 August, according to local media.

International

As the ninth anniversary of the Myanmar military’s 2017 operation against the Rohingya in Rakhine State is marked on 25 August, the IIMM said on 24 August that justice has still not been achieved.

Although China’s military continues activity around Taiwan, analysts say the pattern has shifted compared with the large-scale encirclement exercises and major drills of previous years.

China’s economy grew by only 4.3 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, down from 5 percent in the first quarter and below economists’ forecast of around 4.5 percent.

China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) is reportedly operating five power plants in South Korea with a combined generation capacity of 2.2 gigawatts.

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to further increase economic pressure on Iran and is preparing sanctions targeting Iran’s trading partners.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected calls to hold elections during the ongoing war with Russia, saying it would be extremely risky and could deepen divisions within Ukraine.

In Saudi Arabia, organizers have rescheduled matches 8 to 10 of the Saudi Pro League to give the national team time to prepare for the 2026 Arabian Gulf Cup, to be held in Jeddah from 23 September to 6 October.

Assessment

Taken together, today’s developments show that the military regime’s repression, forced recruitment and airstrikes are continuing, while humanitarian and social crises in resistance-held areas are becoming increasingly visible. The IIMM’s statement that justice remains unachieved for the violence committed against the Rohingya underscores that accountability remains an unresolved issue at the heart of Myanmar’s crisis. At the same time, rising security, weather and human-security pressures along the Thailand–Myanmar border and across the region mean that Myanmar’s conflict continues to carry implications beyond its borders.
