Last month, three female medics were horribly burned. Two were killed, and one survived with permanent injuries. She is expected to undergo multiple surgeries and years of rehabilitation.

Just days later, in Moebye, southern Shan State, resistance forces sent back photos of unusual artillery projectile fragments. According to witnesses, the explosion caused a massive fire and a thick white smoke cloud. Free Burma Rangers (FBR) on the scene provided photos and videos, describing the explosion: “no casualties, but huge white smoke plume and very toxic.”

With similar reports emerging of the Burma Army using firebomb-type munitions, it has become increasingly important to investigate whether the junta is employing white phosphorus, napalm, or other incendiary weapons. Such weapons may constitute a violation of international humanitarian law.
