Narinjara News, April 30, 2026

The Myanmar military junta announced on the evening of April 30 that State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi has been transferred from Nay Pyi Taw Prison to house arrest.

According to the official statement, the transfer was granted to mark Buddha Kason Full Moon Day.

Under Section 541 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code, the military stated she will serve the remainder of her sentences at a "designated home." However, the junta has not yet specified the location of this residence.

To accompany the announcement, the military commission released a photo of Aung San Suu Kyi. While the image serves as proof of life, the statement did not clarify when the photo was taken or if it reflects her current condition.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been in detention since the February 1, 2021, coup. Initially sentenced to 33 years on various charges, some of her sentences were later commuted. Despite these reductions, she has remained in isolation at Nay Pyi Taw Prison for several years.

Analysts suggest the move may be a response to sustained domestic and international pressure or a strategic attempt by the junta to de-escalate political tensions.

However, observers emphasize that this transfer is not a pardon or a release, but merely a change in the "place of execution" for her sentences. Consequently, the public remains deeply concerned regarding her health, safety, and level of access to the outside world.

While rumors of her move to house arrest have circulated frequently in the past, this marks the first time the military has issued an official statement and photo to confirm the change.

This development follows the April 17 amnesty of former President U Win Myint, who was released on the Myanmar New Year after serving time for corruption and electoral charges.

Both leaders were among the hundreds of NLD officials arrested during the initial military takeover in 2021.
