The Burmese Women’s Union (BWU) announced on 20 January that 478 women lost their lives in armed conflicts across Myanmar in 2024, a stark rise from the 392 female casualties reported in 2023. The increase of nearly 100 deaths underscores the escalating violence in the country.
According to BWU, the majority of these fatalities were caused by aerial bombardments and artillery shelling. Additionally, six women died due to landmines and sexual violence, while one was executed by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA).
