Aid workers criticize response to nationwide floods

Aid workers and residents in Ayeyarwady and Mandalay regions told DVB that the regime in Naypyidaw is failing to provide emergency relief assistance and effective aid to the victims of flooding in Ayeyarwady, Mandalay and Sagaing regions. Residents in Ayeyarwady’s Lemyethna Township told DVB that nobody in the community has received any relief assistance or supplies from the regime.

Regime media reported over 23 billion MMK ($5.2 million USD) in donations was given out by Naypyidaw for relief and rescue activities in flood-hit areas of Lemyethna, which is located 85 miles (136 km) north of the region’s capital Pathein. The regime’s Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Soe Win reportedly handed out 19 million MMK ($4,328 USD) in assistance to Lemyethna residents affected by the flood.
