The Arakan Army (AA) released a statement on 7 October expressing its gratitude to individuals and organizations that opposed and condemned the military junta’s airstrike in Kyauktaw Township, Rakhine State, which claimed the lives of 50 local residents.

On 28 September, shortly after 12:00 PM, the military junta carried out an airstrike near the India Market and the Kissapanadi Bridge in Kyauktaw. The attack killed 50 local residents and injured 57 others.

The AA’s statement described the incident as a major war crime committed by the military junta.

“I am deeply shocked by the airstrike on a market in Myanmar on Monday. This is the latest reminder that the Myanmar military junta has absolutely no regard for international law, or for the safety of the people they claim to govern,” said Gregory W. Meeks, a ranking member of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Similarly, the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and various civil society organizations have also condemned the attack.

In addition, Ana Marie Hernand, Assistant Secretary for ASEAN Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, the upcoming rotating chair of ASEAN, also expressed grave concern over the Kyauktaw airstrike.

Civil society organizations, including the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), have also strongly condemned the military junta.

The AA stated that the Arakanese people will forever remember and remain deeply grateful to all individuals and organizations who stood in solidarity with them and strongly objected to and condemned the devastating airstrike.
