Around 8,000 villagers have fled their homes in Kyauk Phyu Township, Rakhine State, as fierce fighting intensifies near the Taung Maw U naval base.

An official from the Kyauk Phyu Emergency Relief Organization reported that junta forces from the naval base have expanded their offensive, forcing residents from at least 15 nearby villages to evacuate. The displaced communities include Sanay, Taing Chaung, Taung Maw, Zai Chaung, Htein Dwe, Pyone Pye, and Ava Taung.

The current wave of clashes erupted on May 10, 2026, when a junta column of approximately 100 soldiers advanced toward Sanay after being blocked by the Arakan Army (AA). Following heavy casualties suffered by the junta forces on the first day of combat, the military retaliated by intensifying airstrikes.

"The fighting is escalating rapidly, and heavy aircraft are being deployed," an aid worker stated. "As a result, more villages are being evacuated, including Htein Dwe and Pyone Pyae east of Sanay."

Local humanitarian workers emphasize that the 8,000 newly displaced people are in urgent need of shelter, food, and basic medicine. This surge brings the total number of displaced civilians across Kyaukpyu Township to an estimated 50,000, driven by the military's steady troop build-up since the coup.

Political analysts note that Kyaukpyu holds immense strategic significance. As the site of major Chinese development projects and a vital geopolitical gateway to the Indian Ocean, the township is widely considered a critical target in the conflict.

The Arakan Army has already captured 14 townships across Rakhine State and Paletwa in southern Chin State.

The battle for Kyaukpyu is expected to intensify further following a declaration by AA Commander-in-Chief General Twan Myat Naing, who announced plans to completely seize all remaining towns in Rakhine State by the end of 2027.
