794 male/female prisoner from Insein Prison pardoned

On the Myanmar New Year’s Day, 794 male and female prisoners, including foreigners, were released from Insein Central Prison in Yangon on the morning of April 17, according to the Prison Department.

Yangon Region Minister for Security and Border Affairs Col. Win Tint and the Yangon Region Police Chief delivered speeches to the male and female prisoners who were pardoned from Insein Central Prison at the gymnasium of Insein Prison.

After that, the pardoned prisoners, including nine foreign prisoners, 522 national prisoners and 263 prisoners, totaling 794 male and female prisoners, were transported to their respective townships by YBS vehicles.

Among those released from Insein Prison after being pardoned is documentary filmmaker Shin Devi, who was sentenced to life in prison.The Office of the President issued an order on April 17 (Myanmar New Year’s Day) to pardon 4,335 male and female prisoners serving sentences in various prisons/jails across the country to mark the Myanmar New Year.

Similarly, in order to promote friendly relations between the two countries, the President also pardoned 179 foreign male and female prisoners serving sentences in various prisons/jails and deported them under Article 204(a) of the Constitution.

In addition, among the persons convicted of a crime committed before April 17 in any prison, detention center, or camps, those sentenced to death shall be commuted to life imprisonment, and those sentenced to life imprisonment and indefinite imprisonment shall be commuted to 40 years imprisonment (excluding those whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment under previous pardon orders), those serving sentences of more than 40 years to serve 40 years, and those serving sentences of 40 years or less to serve one-sixth of their remaining sentences.
