Yangon-based embassies and diplomatic missions launch digital rose campaigns to mark Aung San Suu Kyi’s 81st birthday

Yangon-based foreign embassies and diplomatic missions launched parallel digital campaigns on 19 June to mark the 81st birthday of detained public leader Aung San Suu Kyi, signaling international solidarity with the people of Myanmar.

Missions including the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, and Switzerland simultaneously shared images of roses on their official social media pages to honour the occasion.

The British, EU, and German embassies updated their social media profile pictures to rose designs in tribute to the nationwide “Rose Campaign” organized by local protest groups, who had urged participating citizens especially those in areas under military control to maintain strict security awareness.

Alongside the symbolic tributes, several governments issued formal statements reiterating demands for political reform and the release of political detainees.

The Embassy of Canada called for Aung San Suu Kyi’s unconditional release, immediate access to adequate medical care, the release of all remaining political prisoners, and an end to ongoing violence.

Australia strongly echoed these calls, emphasizing that she must have access to her family, legal counsel, and medical care, while urging an inclusive dialogue in alignment with ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus.

Concurrently, the Swiss Embassy reiterated its demand for the release of all unjustly detained individuals, while the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) issued a statement reinforcing that the release of all political leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi, remains a critical prerequisite to resolving Myanmar’s current crisis.
