Win Myint Is Free—Where Is Aung San Suu Kyi?

The release of ousted President Win Myint from prison has been greeted with widespread relief across Myanmar’s political and resistance circles. Social media quickly filled with prayers and messages celebrating his freedom. Yet the moment of joy was tempered by a sobering reality: Win Myint had already served most of his sentence, and thousands of political prisoners remain behind bars.

His release came as part of a New Year amnesty that freed more than 4,500 prisoners, including over 100 political detainees. The announcement immediately raised a far more consequential question: will Aung San Suu Kyi be next?

Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s former State Counselor and the country’s most revered democratic leader, remains imprisoned. In recent days, rumors circulated—likely seeded by the regime’s psychological warfare apparatus—that she would be transferred to house arrest. The reports proved false, though they appeared designed to test public reaction. Her sentence was reduced as part of the same amnesty, but her detention continues.
