With a new government expected to be formed in late March, public attention in Myanmar has zeroed in on two questions: who will become president, and—more critically—who will take over as commander‑in‑chief of the armed forces if Senior General Min Aung Hlaing steps aside.

Speculation has intensified that Min Aung Hlaing may move into the presidency, raising immediate questions about who would replace him as the supremo of the armed forces—a position that has dominated Myanmar’s politics for six decades and retains constitutional authority to seize power.

Who will be Myanmar’s next commander-in-chief?

Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said after an informal meeting with junta Foreign Minister Than Swe on Feb. 18 that Myanmar is preparing to appoint a president, prime minister and new commander‑in‑chief as part of forming a new government.
