Villagers Evacuated in Southern Ponnagyun Township Amid Intense Fighting

Hundreds of residents from multiple villages in southern Ponnagyun Township, which borders Sittwe Township, are fleeing their homes due to escalating clashes and heavy artillery shelling.

According to local sources, the displacement affects several areas, including Tanbakka, Phalagone, Padesa, Yachaung, Sarpyingyi, Phone So, Htapin Hat (Apakta), and Yephyu Kan villages, as well as parts of Ponnagyun Town and Guwa village.

"Most people had already left the southern part of Ponnagyun and Ponnagyun Town since the conflict began," a local resident told Narinjara. "Now, the remaining population is also moving. Villagers are deeply concerned about artillery, naval, and airstrikes hitting their homes, prompting them to seek safety further inland."

The situation escalated on September 3 when military forces crossed the Minchaung Bridge from Sittwe Township. Supported by air and naval units, the troops advanced in formation, triggering fierce clashes with the Arakan Army (AA) that continued through September 4 and 5.

While the military column reportedly suffered significant casualties and subsequently withdrew toward the Minchaung Bridge, intense bombardment persists. Ongoing airstrikes, heavy artillery fire from warships, and drone skirmishes continue to force terrified civilians to flee for their lives.

Local sources also indicated that the Arakan Army sustained casualties during the intense engagement, but Narinjara could not verify or confirm this, as the AA has not released any information about the fighting.
