US Diplomat’s Death in Yangon Probed as Homicide; Thai Woman Detained

The death of an American diplomat in Myanmar’s commercial capital Yangon is being investigated as a suspected homicide, with regime police detaining a Thai woman in connection with the case, according to an AP report citing diplomatic sources.

The diplomat, whose name has not been made public, was found dead about two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence & Hotel, which is popular with diplomats, businesspeople and other international visitors. The complex, which features a hotel and long-term rentals, is located about 1.5 km from the US Embassy.

The US State Department confirmed the death of a US government employee assigned to the embassy in Yangon, but declined to provide details of the case, the AP said.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry told the AP it has provided consular assistance to the woman in custody and notified her family.

The US Embassy, US officials in Thailand, the hotel manager and the responsible police station all declined to the AP.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military led by then-Senior General Min Aung Hlaing staged a coup in February 2021, ousting the democratically elected civilian government led by democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Min Aung Hlaing has since stepped down as military leader and had himself installed as president after elections widely dismissed as a sham.

Since the 2021 coup, the country has been facing nationwide unrest, with People’s Defense Force groups and several allied ethnic armed organizations fighting the regime.

Due to the junta’s indiscriminate shelling and airstrikes, as well as the ongoing armed conflict, over 3.7 million people have been displaced across the country.

Meanwhile, the country’s economy has collapsed due to the mismanagement of the military regime led by putschist-turned-president Min Aung Hlaing.
