The United Nations International Children’s Fund, known as UNICEF, is deeply concerned about a recent attack on boarding schools in Myanmar’s Arakan (Rakhine) State.
The organization released a statement following the deaths of children in a series of attacks on schools in the region.
A junta airstrike that occurred just after midnight on September 12 killed at least 20 students and injured 28 others at two private boarding high schools in Thayet Ta Pin village. The village is located seven miles east of Kyauktaw on the upper Kaladan River.
UNICEF expressed extreme concern over the overnight attack on a boarding school in Kyauktaw Township, Rakhine State, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of children as they slept.
This attack is part of a disturbing and escalating pattern of violence in the state, where children and families are suffering greatly.
