UK Under Secretary of State Baroness Rosalie Winterton has spoken out on the Myanmar junta’s recent massacre of civilians in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

Families are reported to be searching around a charred market in Kyauktaw in western Myanmar after a military airstrike killed 50 people, one of the deadliest recent bombardments in the civil war.

Witnesses say the military’s air force raided the riverside commercial hub in Kyauktaw town in western Rakhine state around midday on Monday.

The following is her statement issued on 30 September:

“I am appalled by the reports of a military airstrike on a market in Kyauktaw, Rakhine, which has resulted in a significant loss of life.

“Attacks on civilians are utterly unacceptable, and the UK condemns this devastating attack.

“We stand with the people of Myanmar. The UK is clear: all civilians must be protected and airstrikes must stop.”

Baroness Winterton, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State
